Currently none of the five leading national weight loss companies offer any reliable information about their success rates. Nor have they allowed objective researchers to evaluate them. In some of it's ads, Nutri/System proudly proclaims, "We succeed where diets fail you," but it has no solid data to support this assertion. Most companies won't comment on their success rates or insist they just don't know.

"They probably do have information on the success of their programs," counters Dr. Brownell, a professor of psychology at Yale University and a veteran obesity researcher. "But in the absence of all companies providing information at the same time, it would be a brave act indeed to share results that may be discouraging."

One of the few companies that does release data is The Diet Workshop, a small chain in the East and Midwest. The company estimates that only 8% of it's customers reach their weight-loss goal and maintain it for at least six months. The figures are consistent with what researchers have claimed for diet programs in general for years. Still, 1 in 12 does succeed in meeting and maintaining the present weight goal. The other 92% fail!

Neither Thompson Medical, maker of Ultra Slim Fast, nor DynaTrim's Lederie Laboratories provides published studies on how effective it's products reduce weight and keep it off.

Market Data Enterprises, a market research company, recently compiled data on thousands of patients participating in Optifast and Medifast at a cost of $2,000 to $3,000! A year or more after completing the program, up to 60% relapsed. Add in the largest number of people who never finish the programs, and it's clear that chances for sustained weight loss are slim...
